Horncastle Enchanted Town, part of SO Festival, is a brand new creative concept that combines local culture, live performance and technology and aims to engage local communities, which pulled 4,000 visitors into the town center for the evening, boosting local business.

The centerpiece of the Horncastle Enchanted Town event was two large format video projections works created and completed with bespoke soundtracks from Monid, which took their starting points from some well-known local personalities – primarily the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson and botanist Sir Joseph Banks.

It unfolds a fantasy tale inspired by that voyage, with Banks starting off as the Great South Sea Caterpillar and a legendary sea monster, the Kraken.

The artwork was based on some of Banks’ botanical drawings taken from the Cook voyage together with various cartoons and caricatures of Banks by 18th-century satirist, James Gillray and among other materials.

The work starts with images of Joseph Banks as the Great South Sea Caterpillar turning into the Bath Butterfly and ends with The Kraken from Tennyson’s poem rising from the deep.
